With a population of just under 8,000, the USA’S smallest state capital was originally named after the city in southern France. The ambience, however, is quintessentially New England, with visitors exploring quaint architecture, a lively arts scene and a diverse range of restaurants, largely thanks to the presence of the New England Culinary Institute. The city’s crown jewel is the impeccably restored Vermont Statehouse, one of the oldest and best preserved in the country – complete with a distinctive gold-leaf dome. With a number of Vermont’s famed ski resorts under an hour’s drive away, and just 15 minutes from Ben & Jerry’s original factory (do the tour), it’s a great base from which to experience the Green Mountain State.
