A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

-

Visitors to the USA’S newest national park, New River Gorge in West Virginia, can explore a railroad dating back to 1872, which is lined with rusty mine cars and coal workers’ gravestones.

But while these relics are reminders of the area’s industrial past, nature has fought back – and now 70,000 acres of wetlands and forests stretch from Bluestone Dam to Hawk’s Nest Lake. As well as cycling the railroad, you can hike trails and raft down the New River, which courses through the park’s canyons. nps.gov/neri
