Port Lockroy
This former British scientific base hosts a museum where visitors can send a postcard to a loved one (for £2) from the world’s most southerly post office (pictured right). 2
Cuverville Island Glaciated mountainous island in the Errera Channel, discovered by a Belgian expedition (1897-99), possessing vertical cliffs and a large gentoo colony. 3
Base Brown
It was near this Argentine science base that, in 1921/1922, two British researchers, Bagshawe and Lester, spent a year living beneath an upturned boat. Whales abound offshore in Paradise Harbour. 4
Lemaire Channel
Truly dramatic 11km-long channel dotted with icebergs and flanked by lofty dark cliffs. 5
Recess Cove
Fabulous and infrequently visited beach, charted by explorer Adrien de Gerlache, where seals haul out and fish in the shallows. 6
Enterprise Island
Site of the SS Guvernøren wreck and extensive historical reminders of the whaling industry. 7
Wilhelmina Bay Astonishing glacial bay, often full of feeding humpback and minke whales, seals and blue-eyed shags. 8
Robert Point
Volcanic beach in South Shetland with high densities of chinstrap penguins, elephant seals and skuas.
