Back­stop could stay

THE Ir­ish bor­der back­stop pro­vi­sion in the Brexit deal could con­tinue in­def­i­nitely “un­less and un­til it is su­per­seded” by a new agree­ment, ac­cord­ing to Gov­ern­ment le­gal ad­vice.

The po­si­tion state­ment re­leased yes­ter­day also said the UK faces pay­ing ex­tra money to the EU if the im­ple­men­ta­tion pe­riod af­ter the March de­par­ture date has to be ex­tended.

Theresa May’s chief Europe ad­viser Olly Rob­bins ad­mit­ted the sit­u­a­tion was “un­com­fort­able”.
