Town’s Highland fling
Bathgate town centre rang with the sound of the pipes on saturday as West Lothian Highland games took place.
the event saw bands compete as well as hosting heavy sports and Highland dancing contests.
And the day was hailed as a great success.
Alex Linkston, chair of the West Lothian Highland games Committee, said: “We were lucky to have good weather and there was a very good atmosphere in the park.
“Around 1800 people turned out to enjoy the pipe band competitions, dancing and heavy sports.
“We wanted it to be a family event, so there were activities such as face painting and cookery demonstrations. Overall it was a really good day.”
Bathgate played host to West Lothian Highland Games last weekend.
The annual event in Bathgate’s Meadow Park saw hundreds of people from across the county and beyond make their way to the town to take part in the competitions or just spectate at the many events taking place.
Among the main attractions were the pipe bands which played in competitions throughout the day.
It was a great day for West Lothian musicians with local bands taking many of the top honours.
Peoples Ford Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band won first place in Grade One, with Torphichen and Bathgate Pipe Band taking the second spot. In Grade Two, Torphichen and Bathgate won while Peoples Ford Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia came second.
Peoples Ford Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia took the top spot in the juvenile section and West Lothian Schools won the novice category.
The event also saw heavy sports take place – with the overall winner named as Kyle Randalls.
And Highland dancing also proved popular with the crowds and saw dancers from West Lothian and beyond vying for top places.
