Glorious day for Cub Scouts anniversary
Cubs celebration
West Lothian’s Cubs celebrated a century of scouting at Torphichen last week.
This year marks the 100th year of Cub Scouting and the occasion was marked with a fun day at the Craigs Campsite.
Just under 200 Cubs from the West Lothian district packed out the site to take part in cooking, fire lighting, pioneering and water rockets as part of the event.
And the group leaders were given a special ‘thank you dinner’ to honour their work.
Cathie Smyth, the Assistant District Commissioner for Cub Scouts in West Lothian, said: “Since it was officially founded by Baden-Powell in 1916 (then known as Wolf Cubbing), generations of young people have embarked on an adventure filled with laughter, excitement and camaraderie; an adventure inspired for many years by Rudyard Kipling’s fascinating classic, The Jungle Book.
“Around 190 Cubs descended on The Craigs Campsite, Torphichen ( West Lothian District’s Scout Camp Site) for an action packed day of fun.
“The Cubs were split into nine groups who walked round and took part in various activities including; backwoods cooking, fire lighting, pioneering, water rockets and more.”
She added: “The day kicked off at 10am and finished at 3.30pm with the last hour dedicated to eating birthday cake and singing some songs before all cubs and leaders headed home.
“In the evening, there was also a chance for all leaders from across West Lothian district to gather together for a thank you meal to celebrate and thank all their hard work in running their sections.”
This was to join in with the ‘ Thank You’ events that are being run all over the country to recognise the contributions of all volunteers within the scouting movement.”
