Finalheat triumph forthe Monarchs

-

The Edinburgh Border Roofing Monarchs stunned the Newcastle Diamonds by stealing victory in the final heat when the two teams met at Armadale on Friday night.

In a dramatic evening of racing, Edinburgh pulled off a shock 5-1 in heat 15 to grab a 46-44 win over the visitors.

Defeat would have been tough for the Monarchs to take after they had led all the way from heat three before suffering a 5- 1 loss in the penultimate race which took Newcastle in front.

But a stunning final heat from Kevin Wolbert and Sam Masters stole the win for the home team.

Fans of both teams were probably amazed watching heat 15, as Wolbert rocketed round the outside and Masters slotted in to defend second spot from the hard pressing Robert Lambert.

In truth, it was far from a vintage display by the Monarchs, with Masters using an untried engine that perhaps played a part in his relatively disappointing night with just two wins from five races.

Wolbert won four races and deservedly picked up the Monarch of the Match award, and Dan Bewley swept to his first race win in heat four to great acclaim.

Ryan Fisher battled as always but Erik Riss, Max Clegg and Jye Etheridge were not at their best.

Even though Newcastle had the first two race winners, they were unable to create an advantage as both heats were tied 3-3.

Wins from Wolbert and Bewley over the next two heats saw Edinburgh lead by six, which was to be the largest lead of the night.

Newcastle kept within touching distance and a 5-1 from Lewis Rose and Ludvig Lindgren gave them a slight 43-41 lead going into the final heat.

But the heroics of Wolbert and Masters ensured it was to be a home win in the most dramatic of fashions.
