Livi draw SPFL new boys City in the Cup

Top flight Accies are biggest challenge in group G

- Callum Carson

Livingston have been drawn against SPFL new boys Edinburgh City in next season’s new-look Betfred League Cup.

It will be a case of Meadowbank old versus Meadowbank new – as the Lions left Meadowbank Stadium, home of the Lowland League champs, in 1995 after 21 years at the ground to relocate from the capital to West Lothian.

The club also changed their name from Meadowbank Thistle and City then took up residence of the ground.

It will be the first time the two sides have met in a competitive fixture.

David Hopkin’s men will also face Hamilton Academical, St Mirren and Ayr United in Group G.

The action kicks off on July 16, with dates and fixtures yet to be announced, with the five teams playing each other once.

Livi won’t be considered favourites to progress to the next round, with only the group winners being guaranteed a berth in the last-16.

The top four runners- up from the eight groups will also progress and be joined in the second round by Scotland’s four European representatives – Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs.

But with a Premiership side and two Championship teams in their group, the Lions will have to cause a few upsets to book a place in the second round.

Livingston, who return to pre-season training on June 16, will begin their preparations for the new campaign with a friendly at home to Dunfermline Athletic on July 2.

That match will quickly be followed by games against Greenock Morton (July 5) and St Mirren ( July 9) at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

Meanwhile, “early bird” season tickets are still on offer with adult tickets being priced at £180 which works out at £10 per home game as the side prepare for life in League One.

Concessions are priced at £ 120, with under- 16 season tickets half that price at £60.
