Gutted Fauldhouse suffer late cup agony

- Callum Carson

Fauldhouse United suffered late agony as a 93rd minute goal put paid to their hopes of sealing an East of Scotland Cup final spot.

United were by far the strongest team throughout but spurned a series of chances which would prove costly as Callum Young pounced deep into injury-time to send Dundonald into the final against Bo’ness United.

It capped a famous few days for the Bluebell who sealed promotion to the Superleague on Saturday with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against Dundee Violet.

Both teams looked to be slightly jaded in the opening stages as there was little in the way of free flowing football played.

Things picked up considerably around the half hour mark with the hosts creating the better chances.

Kevin Ross headed just wide before Jordon Love failed to capitalise after he broke through the Bluebell defence.

United full- back Gary Fallon went close when he fizzed a free-kick narrowly over the bar just before the interval.

Davey Cowan’s men also had the upper-hand during the second-half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Ross Donnelly should have done better on the hour mark when he pounced from close range.

But some frantic defending by the visitors saw the ball bundled wide for a corner-kick.

Jamie Robertson was next to go close after he latched on to a stunning 50yard pass from Alan Lawson, but he fired just wide.

At the other end, Andy Murphy was rarely tested but did pull off a terrific instinctive save at the back post from a close range header.

The longer the game went on, the more likely it appeared that United’s lack of killer instinct in front of goal would come back to haunt them. With five minutes remaining, Donnelly had to be taken off after picking up an ankle injury, leaving United a man short after they had used all three substitutes.

And the Bluebell took advantage as Young found himself unmarked just six yards out to slam the ball home for the killer blow.

Just two days earlier, Fauldhouse, scored a stunning 4-1 away win against Carnoustie Panmure to climb out of the relegation zone.

A Robertson brace along with goals from Donnelly and Ryan Stewart clinched the points after they fell behind in the opening minute.
