Livingston goalkeeper Gary Maley is set for a dream professional debut at the age of 34 – and he insists he’s going to love every moment of it.

The former Broxburn Athletic stopper made the step up to the seniors for the first time in his career over the summer and is set to be called upon for the Lions’ IRN-BRU Cup clash against Celtic Colts at the Tony Macaroni Arena.

With first-choice keeper Liam Kelly away with the Scotland Under- 21 side and Darren Jamieson on loan at Bo’ness United, Maley will be guarding the Livi goal in front of the TV cameras on Saturday evening.

It’s a day he admits he never expected and calls it a “baptism of fire” but he’s determined to make the most of his big opportunity.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Fingers crossed everything goes to plan. I’m certainly going to enjoy the experience.

“I never thought I’d get the opportunity to play at this level, I have to admit. It’s incredible and I can hardly believe it.

“It will be a hard game. You don’t get to play for Celtic at any level without being a talented footballer and it’s a real challenge for the team.

“It’s a bit of a baptism of fire for me but I’m raring to go and hopefully we can get the win and a place in the next round.”

As for life in the seniors, Maley, who spent seven seasons at Albyn Park and counts Bathgate Thistle and Pumpherston amongst his former clubs, says he’s coping well and enjoying the challenge.

He said: “It’s a massive step-up. I played my entire career in the Juniors and thought I played well but this is a whole different level.

“It’s a steep learning curve to be at Livingston but I feel I’ve adapted very well.

“How could you say no to an opportunity like this, especially at my age?

“I’m looking to take a leaf out of Scott Pittman’s book who has really kicked on to the next level after making the move from the Juniors.

“I know I’m 34 but it is my first year at this level and it’s all about learning and moving forward and that’s what I feel I’m doing.”

Meanwhile, striker Thomas Orr has returned to Morton after his loan deal at the club was ended.

The youngster made three substitute appearances for the Lions.
