Doughnuts bid

Comic Relief world record attempt

- Sean O’Neil

A West Lothian man will attempt to break a world record for Comic Relief by eating as many jammy doughnuts as he can within three minutes - without licking his lips.

David Mitchell, from Livingston, will attempt the mouthwatering task of eating at least seven doughnuts - the current record is six - without licking his lips or taking a drink of water tomorrow (Friday), Red Nose Day.

David has been busy preparing for his task and joked that as other products are getting smaller, “donuts have got bigger”.

He said: “I don’t think I’ll be eating jam doughnuts again. My wife thinks I’m nuts but she’s right behind me. It’s all for a good cause.

“It’s the not licking your lips part that’s horrible. A few people have tried this record in the last few years and failed but I’m hoping that on the day I can do it.

“All I’m thinking about is raising money for Red Nose Day.”

David first came up with idea a couple of years ago.

But was too late to organise it for Comic Relief.

He then thought about doing the same record for Sports Relief but thought that “eating as many doughnuts as possible for Sports Relief might not be appropriate.”

David was keen to try a record attempt for Comic Relief and had been searching for one when he came across a record that he had some history with.

He said: “I was looking through the records that I could have a go at.

“When I was 19 I won a bet that I could eat 30 doughnuts in 30 minutes - but that was a long time ago.”

David will attempt to beat the current record of six doughnuts in three minutes at the Sainsbury’s in Livingston 10.30am tomorrow .

The event will be filmed and photographed with two timers also lined up as per world record rules.

David said: “I’ve got everybody in place. Red Nose are right behind me and Sainsbury’s too.

“Everybody’s ready except me.”
