Student bakes up a real storm for charity

Stephanie’s special treat for Glasgow’s Lord Provost

- Marjorie Kerr

A West Lothian student served up a special treat for Glasgow’s Lord Provost.

Stephanie McMurdo ( 28) from Whitburn, is a student at City of Glasgow College and was guided by lecturer Selina McCrae and senior chef lecturer - and current BBC ‘Masterchef: The Professionals’ winner - Gary Maclean, to bake a spread of cupcakes, biscuits and a speciallydesigned cake to mark Red Nose Day.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty was joined by Paul Little, principal and chief executive of City of Glasgow College, City Chambers staff, councillors and representatives from a local charity as the Lord Provost’s dining room was transformed into a tea room especially for the annual Comic Relief event.

Stephanie, along with fellow City of Glasgow College students David Curston, Hannah Curston and Fergal Devlin, was chosen to bake for the occasion using particular expertise gained from her HNC college course.

Stephanie, who is studying NC Bakery, said: “I chose to come to City of Glasgow College to do this bakery course as I thought it was the best one on offer. I have loved every minute. We were challenged to create cupcakes and empire biscuits for the Lord Provost and it was good fun trying to design all the different faces. The course is half bakery and half cake decorating so you get a good chance to learn an array of skills. I want to make a career out of cake decorating and one day run my own business. However, just now I am concentrating on trying to learn as much as possible.”

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said: “I’d like to thank the BBC’s Masterchef winner Gary Maclean and his students for their support for my ‘ Tea with the LP’ event. Their donation of beautiful baking was a much appreciated addition to that supplied by council staff and I hope we raise a lot of money for this worthy cause.”

Principal Paul Little said: “It was an honour to be part of this event. I’m really proud of what our students have achieved and their contribution to such a worthwhile cause. Events like this offer a great opportunity to show off the unique skills and techniques acquired under expert tutelage, as well as providing invaluable experience for future careers in the industry.”
