Monarchs ready for Glasgow

Now riders want revenge when Glasgow visit

- Sean O’Neil

The Parsons Peebles Monarchs were back to something resembling top form last weekend as they recorded four points from their two matches.

First the Monarchs comfortably took care of business at Armadale, recording a 52- 40 victory over Workington. The home men took the lead in the first race and were never troubled, building a 10-point lead within five races.

Good performances by Thomas Jorgensen and Matt Williamson for the visitors meant that the Monarchs never ran away with the match, but there was never any real danger they would cause an upset and the hosts moved back to the top of the SGB Championship.

The Monarchs then headed south to Peterborough on Sunday. Few expected the team to gain much with both Erik and Mark Riss missing due to German league and world championship qualifying commitments respectively.

The variances of the rule book meant that only a National League reserve guest was allowed in place of Erik, and when you consider he is averaging close to eight points per match this season that was a big loss.

As it was the team then put in one of their best performances of the season losing narrowly 48-45 this meaning a vital league point was gained.

With a little bit more luck this could have been a win and the absence of the Riss brothers was definitely felt, but in the circumstances this was a welcome bonus and guarantees the Monarchs will be top of the league when they face off against nearest rivals Glasgow at Armadale this Friday.

American star Ricky Wells, who has made a blistering start to the season, knows how important this coming week is as the Monarchs look to avenge their most disappointing performance of the season at Ashfield the other week.

Wells said: “Glasgow gave us an absolute hiding last week, I’ll be the first one to say that. Me and Sam both weren’t starting but Glasgow’s top three are all trappers they are all lightning out the gate.

“We are looking forward to facing them though hopefully we will get a packed crowd and we can give them a hiding like they gave to us. Ritchie Worrall is the man to watch for me on his day he is very quick and can make good starts.

“It will be a tough match but I think our top three need to beat their top three and we will be ok. It’s good that we are both at the top of the Championship and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
