Lothian youth bags first Highland Games win

- Callum Carson

Lothian Running Club’s junior member Hannah Steel won her first race of the 2017 Highland Games season.

The youngster scored the victory in the youths’ 800m handicap race at the Cupar Highland Games on Sunday.

Running from a handicap of 205 metres, Hannah was able to see off the challenge of Aberdeen Athletics Club brothers Edouard and Gaspard Lecrivain to pip them to the finish line.

Hannah’s younger brother Andrew also competed in the race and gave a great account of himself despite finishing outside of the prizes in fifth spot.

Hannah added to her achievements by grabbing two wins and a personal best in the 300m at the final Forth Valley League meeting of the season where all four of LRC’s athletes recorded personal bests.

Charlotte Hendry scored new record times in the 100m and 200m with Eilidh Howard’s throw of 4.15m breaking her previous best in the shot put.

Robyn MacDonald grabbed victories in the 300m, 1500m and long jump, scoring a PB in the latter, while Hannah scored wins in the 300m and 1500m.

Elsewhere within the club, Sarah Inglis was back in action in Canada where she contested the women’s 1500m at the Harry Jerome International meeting in British Columbia.

Feeling under the weather, the LRC member was only able to finish in ninth place in 4:20.17.
