Rosebery Cup win No 25 for Kirkliston Wright’s season just keeps getting better

- Stewart Meikle

Livingston-born darts ace Peter Wright sealed his fourth European Tour title on Sunday thanks to a 6-2 victory over Mervyn King in the final of the European Darts Open.

The world number three continued his great form this term by claiming the £25,000 prize as he lifted a ninth trophy of an incredible 2017.

“Snakebite”got his tournament off to a fast start with a 6-1 victory over Robbie Green in the second round before grabbing a 6-3 triumph in round three against Stephen Bunting. He followed that up with a pair of terrific displays to reach the final as he lost just one leg in his quarter-final win against Dave Chisnall before coming back from 3-1 down to defeat Mensur Suljovic 6-3 in the semi-final with an average just shy of the century mark.

And he found another gear in the final where he strolled to victory with an average of 103 as well as hitting six of his nine attempts at the double.

Wright got his final off to a perfect start by breaking the throw in the first leg thanks to a 136 finish on his way to a 12-darter.

However, he immediately gave up his advantage when King broke back in leg two only for Wright to retake the lead with a 13-dart leg.

That sparked a run of four straight legs for the popular 47-year-old which put him on the brink of victory, sitting 5-1 to the good.

King hit a 180 on his way to cutting the deficit to 5-2 but Wright promptly sealed the win in the next leg with a brilliant 101 take-out to grab the fifth European Tour victory of his career.

He’ll be looking to continue his stunning season when the European Tour continues with the Dutch Darts Masters in September.
