Scheme helps to build future careers
New trades course
A group of West Lothian young people have been building up their skills for a positive future.
Eight young people from across West Lothian have successfully taken part in the council’s multitrade programme, which aims to provide them with a practical and realistic introduction to the construction industry. Organised by the education department and mentored by qualified trade operatives from West Lothian Council’s building services team, the young people had the opportunity to observe and take part in a number of trades such as plumbing, joinery and electrical. Students were also given classroom lessons by qualified trade operatives as well as completing the British Safety Council’s Health and Safety Course. Throughout the programme the students will be given advice and support on how to apply for an apprenticeship in the construction industry, with guidance on the council’s apprentice application process and exam.
West Lothian Council’s head of housing customer and building services, Alistair Shaw, said: “The multi- trades programme is a fantastic way to give young people who are interested in a career in the construction industry firsthand experience of the job. It’s a great way to ensure young people have opportunities to try different trades, before deciding on their career path.”
Three pupils from the programme have already been accepted to West Lothian Council’s apprenticeship scheme as a direct result of taking part in the programme.
Former St Kent i g e r n ’ s Academy pupil, Jay Hubbard from Blackburn, said: “I really enjoyed how the course covered various trades as this confirmed my decision that I wanted to be a plumber. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone who wanted to take up a career in the trades.”
