Wright title bid

-

Livingston-born darts ace Peter Wright is still in contention for the World Matchplay title as the tournament goes into the closing stages.

“Snakebite”booked his place in the quarter finals after a stunning second round victory over Cristo Reyes.

The 47-year-old averaged 104 on the way to an 11-4 victory over the Spaniard.

He finished 11 of his 14 doubles in the clash with the world number three moving into leads of 4-1 and 7-3 with game shots of 96 and 106 before sealing the deal and setting up a quarter-final clash against Darren Webster tonight (Thursday) as he bids for the title.

While the popular Scot eased past Reyes in round two, he didn’t have it all his own way in the first round on the opening night of the event in Blackpool.

That’s after he was able to squeeze past debutant James Wilson in a thrilling encounter, grabbing a 10-8 win to avoid an early exit.

Wilson’s first three darts were a 180 and he stormed to a 3-0 lead.

He also sat 6-3 and 7-4 to the good before Wright fought back.

Speaking ahead of the last eight match-up, Wright commented:““Darren will be a very difficult customer.

“I’ve played him many time and he’s like a little firework and he can play.

“I’m looking forward to it and it should be a good game.”
