Melrose moves closer to dream

-

Bathgate racer Seb Melrose has taken the first step on his dream to the Indy Series.

The 19-year-old Formula Ford driver was recently crowned Champion of Brands and will now go forward to a shootout at the iZone at Silverstone.

Should he be successful there, he will punch his ticket for the Mazda Road to Indy shootout in Phoenix, Arizona.

Seb, who is the godson of fellow Bathgate racer and four-time IndyCar series champion and three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, said he was ecstatic at the result, especially given his short preparation time.

He commented:“I only learned I was racing on Friday morning but by Friday afternoon I was on my way to Brands Hatch.

“I qualified pole on Saturday morning and held on to win the race with the fastest lap and was crowned Champion of Brands.”

He added:“I am so excited – getting to Indy would be my dream come true to follow in my godfather’s footsteps.”

The race was part of the Formula Ford Festival and Seb went on to take an impressive third place podium in the second race.

The shootout at the iZone will include racing, fitness tests and communication skills.

It marks the latest achievement in what has been an impressive year for the youngster.

The Graham Brunton Racing team member fought his way to his first Scottish championship victory at Knockhill in June and has since gone from strength to strength throughout the season.
