Zoo lights switch on as 11,000 book for festive nights

- Sean O’Neil

Five sisters Zoo switched on their Christmas lights to a crowd of around 900 people on Friday as they celebrated taking over 11,000 bookings for their Zoo illumination nights to be held over the festive period.

radio dJ robin galloway turned on the Christmas lights which mark the start of Zoo illuminations - a night run every Friday, saturday and sunday in november and every night in december up to the 23rd.

the illuminations offer visitors the chance to see the zoo“in a different light.”

speaking about the switch-on Lesley Coupar, of Five sisters Zoo, said:“it was a very cold evening but that added to the Christmas feel of it. dJ robin galloway was there from a bout 6.30 and the lights went on at 7.30. “We were really pleased with it.” the zoo had another reason to be pleased as they have already taken 11,000 bookings for this year’s illuminations which is running for the second year.

the winter attraction offers the chance to see the zoo and animals at night covered in thousands of lights with a winter market and ice-skating rink also available to visitors.

in it’s first year the illuminations attracted an extra 10,000 people to the zoo and Lesley said the night is good for the area. she said:“during the day you would come and see the animals and the zoo but in the winter visitor numbers usually drop. But now people can come to see the lovely lights. i’m proud because we’re flying the flag for Visit West Lothian so it’s always good to know we’re bring ing people into the area.”

the Zoo illuminations nights are open from 6pm to 9pm and tickets can be booked through the zoo’s website.
