Hosts win Burnie battle

-

Whitburn came from behind to grab three valuable points in their derby clash with Blackburn United.

The win boosts the Central Park side’s hopes of finishing outside of the bottom four.

The visitors opened the scoring on 15 minutes after Danny Campbell pounced on an errant pass from Whitburn goalie Jordan Allan to roll the ball into the net.

Euan Graham’s men were level midway through the first half when Dewi Taylor was on-hand to slam the ball home after a corner was flicked on to the back post.

Both teams would spurn decent chances to take the lead before the break with Campbell seeing his effort tipped over for the visitors while John Paul Greig saw his header cleared off the line for Whitburn – something that would happen once again 10 minutes into the second half.

The hosts were in front moments after Greig’s second near miss as Taylor was dragged down inside the box. Gary Brass duly stepped up to fire the ball into the net.

United, who are playing their final season in the Juniors as they prepare to make the switch to the East of Scotland League, dominated the play in their search for an equaliser but the Whitburn defence held firm under severe pressure.

With Mark Campbell’s side flinging men forward in the closing stages, they were hit on the counter-attack as the Burnie wrapped up the points just before the final whistle with a third goal.

Brass got in behind the keeper but his effort needed the help of Darren Tomaszewski for it to cross the line and seal the victory.
