Clampdown at recycling centres

-

West Lothian Council have issued the warning that West Lothian recycling centres now only accept household waste.

Commercial waste is no longer accepted at any of WestLothian’sfiverecycling centres, which have now been renamed Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

The move is part of changes at HWRCs that aim to protect both the environment and vital council services by improving recycling rates and reducing landfill costs.

Residents are advised to make sure they know the new rules when they visit a HWRC, such as bringing along valid ID such as a driving license and proof of residence.

Valid ID can be either a current photo driving licence, identity card or passport and a recent (from the last six months) bank statement, council tax, or utility bill. All documents should have matching names and addresses.

West Lothian HWRCs are located at Blackburn, Broxburn, Linlithgow, Oakbank in Livingston and Whitburn, and are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm, from June to September. Pleasenotelast entry is at 6.45pm.

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “We now only accept household waste at our recycling centres, withnocommercial waste allowed. Commercial waste is any waste produced by commercial contractors including organisations, commercial premises, traders, charities, landlords, restaurants, hotels, etc. even if it originates from residential properties. This should have no impact on the vast majority of local residents for their household waste, but individuals are advised to check in advance if they are affected. The small number of local residents who use liveried vehicles with commercial logos or signageonthem, todispose of their household waste will need to apply for a permit to continue to use our HWRCs. For full details, please visit www. westlothian. gov. uk/ recyclingpermit. Local residents who have hired a van to dispose of their household waste will need to bring along a copy of their hire agreement as well as valid ID, such as a driving license or passport and recent council tax or utility bill.”
