Carving a win in wood

Prize time at club

- Staff reporter

Members of the Broxburn Woodcraft Club showed off their considerable talents by showcasing some of their best work at their annual competition and show held at Strathbrock Community Centre recently.

Some 11 categories in woodworking were judged by Colin Gardiner, and the eight categories in walking stick making were judged by Duncan Connling.

It was agreed that both judges had a difficult task deciding winners as the standard of items displayed across the show were of the highest quality and surpassed all expectations.

Each year a display table of non-judged items is present to allow members to showcase items they are particularly proud of, and this year a special mention has to be given to Jim Richardson for his fantastic display of vehicles. The time, effort, and love it took for each creation was clearly evident.

This year saw the introduction of a raffle with prizes donated by club members and this raised £232 for club funds and organisers thanked everyone who had bought tickets.

The charity stall selling wooden pens and other items, created by Dave Irvine, raised £ 60 with the proceeds being forwarded to RESTART Kenya for abandoned and abused children.

The woodcraft club were joined in the show by Broxburn Art Group and West Lothian Scribes who also exhibited a selection of the work produced by their members.

The exhibition was open to the public all day and many the pieces were offered for sale.

Local councillor Chris Horne said after visiting the show: “Congratulations on a fantastic show today.

“The level of skill presented was again great, and a real eye opener for members of the community about what is possible.”

A number of prizes were handed out to very worthy winners, with Alan Thomson taking Best in Show prize.
