Gaffer delighted with a magnificent season

- Stephen Coutts

Fauldhouse boss Jon Connolly admitted it had been a ‘magnificent season’ for his side despite signing- off with a 4-0 defeat to visiting Tayport.

With promotion secured for both sides, ‘Port’s Alan Tulleth opened the scoring with Fraser Anderson netting before Dayle Robertson got in on the act by bagging a brace in the final quarter.

The United boss told Courier Sport: “I can’t slaughter the lads for the last couple of games as the target was straight up promotion with us in the top two and they’ve done that.

“The last few games have been a bit iffy but we’ve got there and we made our target of promotion. You want to win every game but what we’ve had to play in a short space of time is basically half a season.

“From November right through to March we’ve had nothing and to squeeze all those games in - three matches a week for the past while is immense.

“I can’t be too critical of the performance but the main objective is that we’re up and we’ll be there fighting away in the top flight next season.”

Hoose were on top from the start with Jamie McLeod sending in a free-kick from the right that Matthew Bennett connected with and forced a save from Gavin Sorley.

He had to be at his best again when the bristling McLeod crossed in from the left and Jack Currie nudged toward goal only for the keeper to deny the frontman.

Port went against the grain on 20 minutes after Robertson danced through the defence and cut back for Tulleth to drill past JC Hutchison.

United were unlucky in the dying embers of the first half as Sorley denied Ben McGhee before the same player nearly levelled things up with only the crossbar stopping his effort.

After the break Hoose’s McLeod sent in another searching free- kick that Dean Arrol squandered with a header wide.

Tulleth was the architect for the second after he turned Callum Nolan to make space and unselfishly squared for Anderson to fire Port two to the good on 57 minutes.

It was the Tulleth show again as he skinned Nolan - but the defender made amends only to be caught in possession by Stewart McConnachie - who put it on a plate for Robertson to drill home the third on 70 minutes.

The final goal arrived on 77 minutes as Tulleth tried his luck from distance which Hutchison parried -but with no follow up from the Hoose defence it meant Robertson was on hand to tuck away his second of the day.
