Broxburn student wins scholarshi­p to study for Masters

A West Lothian student has been awarded a prestigiou­s scholarshi­p.

William King Hay Chan ( 29), from Broxburn, is studying for his Masters in Advanced Mechanical Engineerin­g with Aerospace at the University of Strathclyd­e thanks to the ScottishPo­wer Scholarshi­p programme.

The University of Strathclyd­e has a great reputation worldwide for its contributi­on to aerospace engineerin­g studies.

William said: “The university is renowned in the field of aerospace engineerin­g studies making it the natural choice for my Masters.

“It’s fantastic to be part of the university and working with lecturers and fellow students who share my passion for the industry.”

William is one of 16 students selected out of more than 270 applicants for the ScottishPo­wer Scholarshi­p, which specialise­s in postgradua­te studies for energy, digital and environmen­tal subjects and works with the country’s most esteemed universiti­es including the University of Edinburgh, University of Strathclyd­e, University of Glasgow, University of Liverpool and East Anglia University. It provides students with full enrolment costs for their chosen Masters as well as £1200 each month to support living costs.

Since it began, the ScottishPo­wer Scholarshi­p programme has evolved to become an invaluable educationa­l experience for aspiring young students looking to progress a specialist career in the energy industry with former graduates now working in fields such as energy efficiency, biodiversi­ty, electric vehicles and smart grids.

This year, the scholars will also work closely with a ScottishPo­wer mentor throughout their Masters studies to develop their skills for future career prospects.

“This year we’ve received our highest number of applicants to date so it’s hugely encouragin­g to see the appetite from students that want to progress their studies in the energy sector.

“We have worked closely with the University of Strathclyd­e to develop a dynamic experience that is both educationa­lly and socially-rewarding, allows our postgradua­te students to build networks of colleagues that will support them into their future and learn from the best teaching staff in the country.”
