Kids are honoured

The kids of Parkhead Primary were applauded as junior heroes in the chamber at West Lothian Council HQ this week.

Councillors welcomed four pupils, Lacey, Aiden, Caleb and Ryan and their head teacher Vicky Fish, with a round of applause as they heard about the work of the school’s junior leadership group, the Parkey Pals.

The pupils gave a presentation about their project, Pack a Care Kit for Someone Without a Home.

They explained how they had contacted local supermarkets asking for help and filled backpacks with items they thought would be helpful to someone homeless.

Strathbrock Family Unit came to the school to meet the leadership group and six of the children presented the first prototype at the Unit. The children met one of the families and learned about how support is provided to families in West Lothian.

Other projects the Pals have undertaken included carol singing and flower planting in West Calder. The Pals have won awards for their work.

Councillor Dodds, chair of the education Policy Development and Scrutiny Councillor Dodds said: “This was an excellent presentation.”

He then congratulated them on the award.

Provost Tom Kerr told the children: “Congratulations on your presentation and the efforts you are making to help people commendable to you as individuals and also for your school.”

A report to the PDSP added: “The work is an excellent example of the community work and projects being undertaken in schools across West Lothian.”
