Gents get their first win

-

A change of scenery worked wonders for a West Lothian gent’s team that finally got off the mark with a good winning performance.

The West Lothian side beat Aberdeen by 8 shots (77-69) after suffering two opening home defeats in the A Division of the indoor bowls Premier League.

Wins on the rinks skipped by the Speirs brothers Neil and James and supported by Craig Moss signalled a welcome return to winning form for the section favourites.

The only setback came in the shape of a double figure defeat inflicted on Calum Logan.

Neil Speirs posted his first win of the campaign by skipping Bryan Cooper, Ian Drysdale, and Des Hagart to a 22-14 triumph over G Forbes .

The rink of Richard Mark, Connor McKendrick, Gary Orr, and James Speirs emulated that 8 shot margin at the 25-17 expense of A Thomson.

A closer call for Craig Moss and his front-three of George Sneddon, Dougie Mitchell, and Jamie Aitken saw them battle to a 16-13 win over K Pirie .

While Nathan McKendrick, Raymond Logan, Cameron Greer, and Calum Logan lost 25-14 to S Thomson.

WL now trail undefeated leaders Falkirk and West of Scotland by 4 points.

They share the 2 point mark with Aberdeen and Lanarkshire while Elgin have zero points.

Balbardie had to settle for a share of the points in a 71-71 battle for supremacy on home territory against Dundee in Division 1 North.

But they remain in the promotion mix just one point adrift of joint leaders Fraserburgh, Cumbernauld, and Coatbridge.

Elsewhere, the play-down action in the Ladies National Singles at Glasgow IBC saw Kim Ross of Balbardie make a prelim exit at the 21-14 hands of Arbroath star Leanne Furye.

West Lothian ace Jenifer Richardson beat Anne Granger of Stirling, 21-3, before losing 21-7 to Laura Welsh of Whiteinch.

Welsh went on to qualify for the semi finals along with Julie Forrest (Teviotdale), Melanie Darroch (Elgin) and Lynn Stein of East Fife.

Opportunity Knocks this weekend for Nathan McKendrick who carries the West Lothian banner into the play-down action of the gents National Junior Singles at Falkirk.

Nathan opens in Saturdays 11am session against Forfar.

Balbardie (unnamed) take to the carpet on the same session against Connor Milne of Turriff.
