Chopper’s chasing a double

Two fights in a month

- Sean O’Neil

Boxer Kieran Smith is set for a mammoth month in the ring as he fights on the Josh Taylor undercard on Saturday before a WBC title shot at the end of November.

The 25- year- old superwelterweight from Greenrigg can’t wait for the double header in Glasgow after spending months out of the ring.

The MTK Globel boxer – whose record stands at 11- 0 with five knock-outs – has been busy training at Springhill gym in Shotts.

Kieran – known as Chopper – said: “I’m just happy to be back fighting. This is what you want. I’ve been waiting for so long.

“I’d fight every week if I could get away with it.”

First up is Saturday’s bout against Polish fighter Rafal Jackiewicz at the SSE Hydro on the Josh Taylor v Ryam Martin undercard.

Kieran said: “Training has been going perfectly. I’ve been training this week for this first fight – after that I’ll be back in the gym come Monday.

“I’m trying to use this first fight for training but I can’t really because of the calibre of fighter, I can’t be taking him lightly.”

On November 30 Smith will then take on Peter McDonagh with a WBC title on the line. Kieran said: “I’ll get through this at the weekend first and I’ll just be right back at it in training.

“I’ll really put in the rounds for McDonagh and the title fight to make sure I’m ready for ten rounds.”

Following the two fights this month, the boxer will try and take a break in December but hopes to be back at the end of February.

Kieran said: “MTK are using the Emirates as there base and are hoping to put on four or five shows a year so I hope to have lots of fights with MTK.”

Smith versus McDonagh features on a fantastic night of boxing at the Emirates Arena with Tyrone McKenna fighting Lewis Benson and Ukahir Farooq up against Iain Butcher for the British bantamweight title.
