Title bid for Smith after he lands KO

Boxer now gears up for clash with McDonagh

Greenrigg boxer Kieran Smith is eyeing up a title later this month after easing to victory at the weekend.

The 25-year-old, nicknamed ‘ Chopper’ knocked out his opponent after just 41 seconds in Glasgow on Saturday - which sets him up nicely for a WBC super welterweight title bid against Peter McDonagh in Glasgow on November 30.

While Smith took care of things quickly in the ring at the SSE Hydro, he admitted it had been a frustrating night waiting to be called into action.

He said: “It was a long night because I was a live floater so I was basically going to be shoved on whenever a fight was finished early but I ended up being on after the Josh Taylor fight.

“I had my hands taped up from 5.30 because I genuinely didn’t know when I was going to be on so it’s a strange experience because you have to be ready to go as soon as possible.

“You have to be in the right frame of mind constantly despite not really knowing what’s going to be happening, so it can be tough.

“There was still a very good crowd that stayed behind after the main fight so it was a decent atmosphere and a great experience to be part of that.

“It was good to get the win so early and maybe there was a bit of me taking the frustration of having to wait around out on the guy.

“You always want to get out there and maybe make a bit of a statement and I felt I did that.”

With it being a quick turnaround before his next bout, Smith, who now boasts a 12-0 pro record, says there’s been no time to relax.

He commented: “The fight was on Saturday and I was straight back in the gym on Monday. There’s been no rest and it’s right back at it again for the next fight.

“It’s good, it’s what I enjoy doing. Obviously I couldn’t take the fight on Saturday lightly, but I was really just aiming to come through with the win and free of injury so I can’t really be any happier with how it went.

“There was no cuts or bumps, so it was a good night but that’s now at the back of my mind and all my focus has to be on the next bout coming up at the end of the month.

“I’ll really be pushing myself and putting in the hard work to make sure I’m at it for the title fight.”

Smith versus McDonagh features on a fantastic night of boxing at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow with Tyrone McKenna fighting Lewis Benson and Ukahir Farooq up against Iain Butcher for the British bantamweight title.
