Ladies special poppy show

Hand knitted key to display

- Sean O’Neil

Two wo m a n remembered the fallen on Armistice Day by organising fantastic displays with over 1000 knitted poppies in their West Lothian towns.

Irene Bishop and Aileen Hawthorn put together the displays,in Broxburn and Livingston respectively, with help from different groups and volunteers.

Irene, who is the chair of Uphall Community Council, organised the Remembrance display at the Strathbrock Centre in Broxburn.

She said: “I would like to thank everyone who cont ributed in anyway to the Remembrance display at the war memorial .

“It is impossible to thank people individually as many people were involved in knitting or crocheting poppies and didn’t leave their names.

“John Smith and the Friday Youth Club all helped to put up the display. Such was the response from the community, it took Liz Dick from Uphall Community Centre and I, the best part of a month to attach all the poppies.

“The display shows what can be done when communities work together and shows the respect we have for those who lost their lives so that we could live ours.”

Aileen Hawthorn ( 79) organised the display at Livingston Old Parish Church.

She said: “My granddaughter (singer) Amy Hawthorn is the Legion Scotland and Poppy Scotland Sweetheart and that gave me the idea to make the display for 100 years since World War One ended.

“We have a craft fair at the church so we started knitting the poppies last year, just after Christmas.

“In the poppy display there’s about 1050 poppies and we’ve decorated the pulpit inside the church.

“The craft group at Craigshill, Knit and Natter, gave me 50 poppies. It was fantastic to see so many people involved.”
