Trust is helping kids to take part in golf

Launch year ends with a special film screening

- Staff reporter

A new charity that helps to teach youngsters important life skills through the game of golf is wrapping up its successful launch year with the screening of a popular Scottish movie.

The Tommy ’ s Honour Education Trust, based in Whitburn, is a non–profit making organisation that pioneers a new way to teach golf to youngsters.

The charity’s mission is to honour the legacy of golf ’s founding father and son, Tom and Tommy Morris, by using the legacy of the life-skills they displayed throughout their lives to educate, empower and inspire the next generation of children.

And to celebrate its launch, the charity has organised a special screening of the film ‘ Tommy’s Honour’, starring Peter Mullan, Jack Lowden, Ophelia Lovibond and Sam Neill and directed by Jason Connery.

The date of the screening has a special significance, marking 144 years to the day since Young Tommy Morris, winner of four consecutive Open Championships and the game of golf’s first superstar, married Margaret Drinnen in the Parish of Whitburn before they returned to St Andrews to set up their marital home.

The event is being held at Whitburn Academy on Sunday (November 25) at 6pm until 9pm.

Before the film there will also be a presentation by children from Croftmalloch Primary School and a video message from the makers.

Secretary Evelyn M Gillespie and honorary trustee Sheila Walker said: “We would be honoured if you could attend to help raise awareness of the trust.

“Our mission is to introduce our golfing heritage at playgrounds and golf practice areas across Scotland through the introduction of our pioneering life- skills programmes.”

The charity has been five years in the making and the concept was struck upon by the charity’s founder to use the history of the game of golf, and in particular the enduring legacy of the approach to life taken by the game’s founding father and son, Old Tom and Young Tommy Morris of St Andrews.

Young Tom was a Scottish professional golfer and considered one of the pioneers of professional golf and the first young prodigy in golf history. He won four consecutive titles in the Open Championship, an unmatched feat, and did this by the age of 21.

His father, Old Tom, was the greenkeeper and professional of the St Andrews Links, and he himself won four of the first eight Open Championships.

Starting with some pilot projects at Greenburn Golf Club in Fauldhouse and North Berwick Golf Clubs, the foundations were laid for the structure of lessons and activities under the banner of the ‘Learn from the Legacy LifeSkills Programme’.

Working in conjunction with golf organisations, education executives and like- minded charitable partners, the Learn from the Legacy Life-Skills Programmes will be introduced to schools, golf clubs, youth clubs.

Using the legacy of the father and son relationship, the Tommy’s Honour Education Trust will introduce all those life-skills by the simple act of teeing up a ball and taking the children on a journey of discovery.

They will not only discover more about the game of golf but, more importantly, discover more about themselves, their place in their family and society in the process.
