Pupils receive school uniform fund boost

Cash to buy ties

- Marjorie Kerr

West Lothian pupils are looking forward to a new look after receiving a donation from a building firm.

West Calder High School Parent Council Sponsor a Tie Appeal has been awarded £500 as part of the Persimmon Homes East Scotland Community Champions scheme. The national match- funding initiative seeks to support groups and charities working to improve the quality of life or environment for local people. West Calder High School Parent Council applied for the funding to boost money already raised to buy every pupil a new school tie.

The move to the new school building prompted a consultation amongst staff and pupils to decide whether the school’s overall branding and uniforms should be updated to coincide with the move. The original red and black school ties will now feature a platinum stripe to bring them up to date.

Fiona Wilson, chair of the school’s parent council, said: “We are thrilled to receive such generous funding from Persimmon Homes East Scotland. The money will be used to help us buy new ties for every pupil as we update our uniform. The Sponsor a Tie Appeal is part of our project to bring the school branding right up to date but we didn’t want parents to have to bear the expense where possible. On behalf of the parent council and the school we would like to thank everyone at Persimmon.”

Jim Kirkpatrick, managing director at Persimmon Homes East Scotland, said: “This month we are proud to support West Calder High School Parent Council’s Sponsor a Tie Appeal. We hope that everyone at the school wears their new ties with pride. As always it was a difficult decision to select our community champions, but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”
