Roberston’s at the double

- Pumpherston .......... 0 Armadale Thistle .... 2

Pumpherston’s perfect league season was brought to an end at home to local rivals Armadale Thistle thanks to a double from Callum Roberston.

Both teams had their fair share of possession in an entertaining clash but it was the visitors who made the most of their opportunities as their inconsistent season continued.

Thistle took the lead moments before the half-time whistle when Roberston’s smart finish beat the home goalkeeper at the near post.

Pumpherston threw everything at the Jags in the early stages of the second half as they looked for a way back into the game but they were unable to really test Thistle’s back-up keeper Jamie Swinburne.

The stand-in stopper had little to do as he deputised for Dylan Rooney, who injured himself in last week’s League Cup win away at Whitburn.

Roberston made his a double on 57 minutes as he took full advantage of some confusion in the Pumpherston back-line to slot home his second of the contest and put his side firmly in command.

Craig Martin’s men aren’t runaway leaders of the Premier League South for no reason, though, and they would dominate the final stages - only to be thwarted in their bid to retain their 100 per cent league record.

Their task was made all the more difficult when former Livingston midfielder Jack Beaumont was shown a second yellow card, while their best chance of reducing the arrears came when Swinburne was alert to palm away a free-kick.

Despite the defeat, Pumpherston are well on track to win the division as they still boast a sizeable 11 point lead over the Jags.
