Comeback falls just short

- Blackburn United .... 3 Heriot Watt Uni ...... 4

Blackburn United fell agonisingly short of pulling off a stunning fightback as they almost sealed a draw despite being four goals down in the early stages of the second half.

The hosts were once again down to the bare bones through injuries and unavailability and they were quickly a goal down as Calvin Muttit outpaced the Burnie defence to fire Uni into the lead at the second attempt after his first effort hit the woodwork.

Niko Giovanovits bundled the ball over the line midway through the first half before Muttit made it three for the visitors before the break with a smart finish.

Just two minutes after the restart, Giovanovits joined his team-mate on a brace after powefully heading home from a corner-kick to seemingly seal the deal for the students.

Blackburn grabbed a small lifeline on 50 minutes when Calum McDowall squared across the six yard box for Danny Campbell to fire home.

Campbell would be unlucky barely a minute later when his 20-yard strike thundered off the underside of the bar and bounced clear.

Midway through the second half, the comeback was well and truly on as Blackburn reduced the deficit further when David Murphy poked the ball to Darren Downie in a crowded box. he showed composure to find the net.

With 13 minutes remaining, it was 4-3 when Craig Young’s cross was headed back across goal by Jordan Bain with Downie netting the rebound after Campbell’s attempt was blocked.

Try as they might, United just couldn’t find a leveller but they gave themselves far too much to do with a sloppy defensive performance.
