LADIES EARN SPOT IN EAST REGION CONTEST

Livingston women earn place in East Region contest

- Callum Carson

Livingston Ladies will field a team in the East Region next season after being accepted into the league for the first time.

The women’s section at the club has been up and running for a couple of years but steady progress on and off the park ensured they were in a position to apply for a place in time for the 2019 campaign.

Team manager Donna McInnes said: “The aim of starting up the women’s section at the club was hopefully to get to the stage where we could field a competitive team in the league so we’re delighted that we’ve now reached that point.

“We will be playing in the East Region and we’re looking forward to the challenge. There will be teams who have a lot more experience but we’ll give it our best shot.

“The morale and atmosphere within the team are terrific so now when people come along to try it out they’re staying because it’s a great group of people who are all just having fun and working hard.”

The new coaching team of Dale Cooper, Ben Shearer and Ronnie McInnes has been credited with improving the quality of play.

Donna said: “The coaches have made a big difference. We can all see the improvement in ourselves and the team and we’re all more confident.”

Captain Liv Fennelly joined the club last season after moving to Scotland from Ireland.

She said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been accepted into the league and hopefully the club can just go from strength to strength now.

“There’s been so much work put into the club over the last couple of years to make sure that we were at this stage so it’s credit to everyone who has played their part.

“I’ve only been here since last year and there’s been a massive difference.

“Everyone is willing to put in the hard work and there’s been massive improvements in the play, especially since the new coaching team came in.

“It’s showing every week and every game that we’re getting better as a team and the individual players are improving.”

She added: “We now have really strong numbers and this is the first year that it’s been a purely Livingston team. We’ve had to combine with other clubs for games in previous years and that can be difficult.

“It’s a great team to be part of. When I moved over here the club were really my social life and helped me settle into a new country.

“We’re very welcoming and we’d encourage anyone at all who wants to get involved to pop down to a training session.

“Obviously we go into the league wanting to win it but the main aim is just to continue growing the club.”
