Women ready for England in World Cup finals

- CALLUM CARSON

Scotland women’s national team coach Shelley Kerr admits she’s excited by the challenge after they were drawn to face England in their maiden World Cup.

The Scots will kick-off their group stage in France on June 9 against the Auld Enemy before taking on Japan on June 14 and Argentina five days later.

And the West Lothian coach says she’s looking forward to the experience, despite the draw that pits them against two of the top three teams from the last World Cup.

She said: “It’s a really tough group. We’re playing Japan, runners-up in 2015, England, who were bronze medallists in 2015, as well as Argentina who have played in World Cup finals.

“But when you get to a World Cup finals there isn’t any such thing as an easy group.

“It’s a very tough couple of games. When you’re a manager you want to compete on the world stage. That’s what it’s all about.

“I’m really excited about taking on the best teams at a World Cup.

“Now it’s all about planning and how we get to the next level. We’ve got to a World Cup finals for the first time so we have to embrace it.

“Tactic ally we’ ve developed, as well as having a critical mass of players who are really hungry. The players have a lot of resilience and want to test themselves on the world stage.”
