MSP welcomes memorial sign

-

Linlithgow MSP Fiona Hyslop has highlighted the importance of signage to historic sites after West Lothian Council installed new signage at the Korean War Memorial in the Bathgate Hills.

The West Lothian politician spoke of the need for the Scottish Government to review its signage policy in regards to historical war memorial sites to help tourists.

Ms Hyslop shared her views after Veterans Minister, Graeme Dey, told Parliament about the new signs erected by West Lothian Council for the Korean War Memorial.

The Scottish Government has now agreed to enter into discussions with Transport Scotland in a bid to highlight destinations of national significance.

Ms Hyslop said: “I am delighted that West Lothian Council has now installed the brown tourist signs on its road network directing tourists to the Korean War memorial.

“I am also pleased that having directly communicated with the Veterans Minister, Mr Graeme Dey, on the importance of this, The Scottish Government has entered into discussions with Transport Scotland to task them with scoping a potential review of its signage policy as it pertains to war memorials that are of national significance.

“These are important historical landmarks that ought to be easy to locate by our local residents and tourists alike and I would thank Mr Dey for taking this action following my discussions with him.”

Mr Dey said: “I am pleased that West Lothian Council has installed the brown tourist signs on its road network; they were erected earlier this year. I hope that they are now enabling improved visibility and access to this important memorial.”
