Taste of success

- DEBBIE HALL

The owners of a West Lothian cafe are celebrating after striking gold at a prestigious awards ceremony.

The Hideaway Cafe at Beecraigs Country Park picked up three gongs at the FreeFrom Eating Awards 2018 for its gluten free menu.

The awa rds were established to encourage innovation and celebrate FreeFrom excellence in the food service industry, focusing on allergy- free cooking.

The Hideaway cafe has only been open for 18 months and its owners were delighted to win in the Newbies category, Cafe and Teashops and Focus on Gluten categories.

Owner Paul Gray, who owns the cafe with wife Audrey Finlayson, said they are over the moon with their success – which also includes two awards from the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce.

Paul said they were inspired to create their gluten free menu after a customer asked for something gluten free, which at the time they didn’t have.

The cafe now offers a full gluten free menu as well as a non-gluten free menu.

Paul said: “We were really surprised to won.

“To be shortlisted is great but to win is something else.

“We focus on allergy dining and our customers know they are safe as we have created an allergy-free area in our kitchen and our customers can see that.”
