Fundraiser Dylan is Local Hero

Superstar 12-year-old raises thousands for charity

-

Superstar Dylan Cathcart has been chosen as this month’s Local Hero thanks to his fantastic fundraising.

The 12- year- old, from Whitburn, was nominated by his proud auntie Nicola because he has helped to raise money with his family since the age of five and has reached over £5000 for various charities, including Marie Curie.

The Centre and West Lothian Courier Local Hero Award was set up to pay tribute to outstanding people in the community who have gone the extra mile to help others with anything from volunteering and fundraising to caring for family members or excelling in school or sports.

In recognition of their kindness and outstanding efforts, The Centre, Livingston rewards the heroes with a £100 gift card to spend in over 80 shops and restaurants in the mall, including M&S, Debenhams, The Disney Store and Wagamama.

The winners also receive a special, personalised framed certificate.

Dylan, who loves helping out every time there’s a family fundraising event since he was five years old, has helped raise in excess of £5000 over the years for various charities, including one which is close to the hearts of his family, Marie Curie.

Not only has he spent weekends bag packing in supermarkets to help raise funds, sold cakes, organised competitions and made tea at various events but he also joined his family in a 5K walk last year.

Nicola said she is very proud of her young nephew.

She said: “Dylan is a very special boy who only thinks about other people and how he can help them.

“He is so kind and generous and helped me out so much every time I’ve been involved in fundraising, never complaining and always with a smile on his face.

“He’s a real trooper who loves talking to people and is especially good when it comes to selling raffle tickets.

“He recently took part in a 5k fun run organised by Strathcarron Hospice in memory of his uncle and auntie’s friend who had sadly passed away at the hospice with the money raised being split between them and Marie Curie - and still regularly asks, ‘what else can I do’.

“He really is one in a million and the best nephew anyone could ever wish for, which is why I nominated him for this fantastic Local Hero Award.”

Ashley Bisland, deputy director of The Centre, Livingston said the award is well deserved. She added: “Dylan is a real superstar in our eyes for helping his family raise so much money for charity for the last seven years, which is why he is definitely worth of winning our very special Local Hero Award.”

Courier editor Marjorie Kerr added: “Dylan has done a fantastic job raising money for charity and is a real credit to his family.

“We are delighted to reward his hard work with this Local Hero award.”
