climate change is the biggest challenge facing the global community. Much environmental policy and net-zero targets are devolved to Scotland but tackling the global challenge also requires the powers currently held by Westminster. We will be judged by future generations on our actions and I am determined to be a strong voice for effective change.
earlier this year the Snp declared a climate emergency and the Snp Scottish government has set the most ambitious targets in the world, aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2045 and reduce emissions by 75 per cent before 2030, exceeding the Intergovernmental panel on climate change’s expectations.
I want to see Westminster require the ratification of the paris agreement as a precondition for any trade deal with the UK. We need action at Westminster to deliver accelerated deployment of fully operational carbon capture and storage, a greener tax deal for heating and energy efficiency improvements and tax incentives for transport.
a green energy deal would ensure renewable energy schemes get the required long-term certainty to support investment. I support creating a net-zero fund from oil and gas receipts to help finance energy transition.
My Snp colleagues and I will hold the tories to account so that the rights and protections safeguarded by eu environmental legislation are not diminished if the UK leaves. If Brexit happens powers must come to Scotland, not Westminster as planned.
