Watson stands in as Connolly steps down

- CALLUM CARSON

Fauldhouse United skipper Sammy Watson will take charge of team affairs for the remainder of the season following the resignation of Jon Connolly.

The former gaffer stood down from his role after three years in charge of the Park View side with assistant manager David Dunn and coach Allan Todd also leaving the club.

Watson will be assisted in his temporary role by senior players at the club while they begin their managerial search.

United have enjoyed a tremendous season as they are still in the running for the East Region South Superleague title as well as reaching the last-16 in the Scottish Junior Cup before being knocked out by West Region giants Pollok.

A statement from club secretary David Huddlestone read: “It is with regret that we announce that Fauldhouse United manager Jon Connolly has informed the club of his resignation as team manager with immediate effect.

“Jon Connolly took over as team manager on the 21st February 2017 during a particularly difficult time in the season which finished with the club being relegated to the then Premier League.

“His efforts to rebuild the team have borne fruit and it is to his credit and his assistant David Dunn that we are currently still in three cup competitions and reached the last 16 in the Junior Cup and are in a good position to challenge for the league title this season.

“Football management is a very stressful job especially in these turbulent times and we would like to thank both Jon and Dunnie for their outstanding efforts on behalf of the club.

“They will always be welcome at Fauldhouse United and the committee and fans wish them every success in the future

“In the interim team affairs will be run by the club captain Sammy Watson assisted by some senior players whilst the club is looking at appointing a new management team for next season.

“Fauldhouse United and its players are fully committed during this difficult time to continuing the work Jon and Dunnie set in place and remain as competitive as ever.”

Watson’s first game in charge, weather permitting, will be a home East Region League Cup on Saturday against West Lothian rivals Pumpherston.
