Cadet to rescue as man collapses
An army cadet’s training kicked in when he went to the rescue of a man suffering from a suspected heart attack.
Lance Corporal Ciaren Adam from the 26 Platoon Livingston detachment was cycling to meet a friend when he noticed a man lying on the ground outside St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston.
The 16-year-old Inveralmond High School pupil quickly sprang into action and took control of the situation.
Another man was standing nearby but he admitted to Ciaren that he knew little about first aid and the teenager took over.
Ciaren moved the stricken man into a comfortable position and continued to talk to him after calling an ambulance.
The emergency services advised Ciaren to get the defibrillator unit from the nearby school, in case they needed it.
He asked a passer-by to fetch it for him while he stayed with the man and kept him calm before the paramedics arrived and took over.
Ciaren is the vice-captain at Inveralmond and his mum, Dawn, says she is very proud of her son and his quick thinking.
Dawn said: “He was in the right place at the right time. Plenty of people have first aid training but few of us would actually be able to put it into practice and deal with a situation like that.
“He calmed everything right down and was directing people away to give the man room to breath once a crowd started to gather round.
“Ciaren is totally trying to play it down and making out like it was no big deal but we are all really proud of him.”
