Asbestos dumped on road

- STUART SOMMERVILLE

Up to four tonnes of asbestos and other building materials have been illegally dumped on a quiet road near Bridgend.

Council staff had to close the road leading to Auldhill Road, Bridgend and the Ochiltree Road heading east from the Woodside Terrace Road.

The materials were dumped last Tuesday night (August 1) and Woodside Terrace, Bridgend, was closed while council officers carry out an assessment before arranging for the materials to be removed safely.

The council is asking anyone with information to call the police on 101 or the council on 01506 280000.

Executive councillor for the Environment Tom Conn said:“This is absolutely disgusting behaviour.

“I’d plead with anyone with information to contact the police or ourselves – this cannot be ignored and it certainly will not be tolerated.

“Quite often councils unfairly get the blame for incidents of illegal fly-tipping but the truth is that it is the culprits that are to blame – nobody else.

“This isn’t waste that is put in a bin, collected by bulky uplift or is taken to a public recycling centre.

“This individual has chosen to ignore their responsibilities which is why they have chosen to illegally dump potentially deadly materials all over a public road. Not only are motorists and local people put at great risk but our staff have to attend to remove it. It is pathetic behaviour. We need people to help us catch these culprits. Someone locally may have information and I’d urge them to call the police on 101 or the council on 01506 280000 and report this.”
