Former Livingston striker Ly n d o n Dykes’ success on the international stage can be an inspiration to his former team-mates.

That’s according to centreback Jon Guthrie who admitted he watched on with pride as the ex- Lion made his Scotland debut on Friday night – and then netted his first international goal in the win over the Czech Republic three days later.

Dykes was sold for a club record fee last month to English Championship side Queens Park Rangers after netting 14 goals in 36 appearances in a Livi jersey.

Guthrie, who is eligible for Scotland through a Scottish grandparent, says it was no surprise to see the Aussieborn ace shine for Scotland and believes it’s proof that a good season in West Lothian can lead to rewards on the international stage.

Speaking to the Courier, he commented: “Everyone is buzzing for him and we were all talking about it in training on Tuesday.

“To be fair over the two games I think he was probably one of the better players and he didn’t look out of place at all.

“None of us are that surprised by how well he’s done because we all knew the qualities he’s got having worked with him every day for a year and we knew that he could take that step up. We’re all delighted for him.”

He added: “It shows that a

Dykes shone during his spell with Livingston good season at this club can let you catch the eye and it’s given hope to everyone else. He had an amazing season last year and sometimes that’s all it takes.

“A few good months and maybe you start to get looked at. It gives everyone hope and belief that if you do everything right at club level and perform well then you can get recognised internationally as well.”

Lions boss Gary Holt admitted he was proud that his former player was performing in a navy blue jersey, saying: “I’ve had a few texts backwards and forwards with the big man and I’m delighted for him – as we all are at the club.

“It’s always pleasing when you see boys you’ve worked with go on and succeed at the highest level knowing you’ve had a part to play.

“It was great for Lyndon but we also had Robby McCrorie in the squad and Deccy (Declan Gallagher) who I worked with here as well – and Liam Kelly before that.

“I thought Lyndon was one of the better players over the course of the two games and he’s done himself no harm.”
