Broxburn want action replay of last season

-

Broxburn Athletic boss Chris Townsley says this summer’s arrivals have been told all about last season’s cup exploits – and hopes that fires them up for success on Saturday.

The Brox travel to South of Scotland side Newton Stewart dreaming of replicating last season’s stunning success in their first ever Scottish Cup journey.

Athletic defeated three higher level opponents – including a thumping 3- 0 victory over League Two side Cowdenbeath – before being cheered on by 1600 travelling fans at Premiership St Mirren in the fourth round.

They lost 3-0, but the Buddies struck twice in injury time to give the scoreline a more flattering look for the hosts.

And Townsley, set to manage his first Scottish Cup game, is hoping for more cup memories this season.

He said: “The guys who weren’t here last season have all been told by those who were just how great that cup run was and what it meant to the club and players.

“Every club at this level dreams of going on a decent cup run – but you can’t do that without winning the first game and that’s the only aim on Saturday.

“Newton Stewart won 7-1 last weekend so we know they’re going to make it tough for us.

“We’re going through a bit of a slump in the league just now so we’re hoping this will be the turning point and can give us confidence.”

He added: “This is a potentially massive revenue source for clubs at our level and every round becomes that bit more important.

“But we have to put that out of our minds for the game and just make sure we can keep things tight at the back.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for the boys to see if they can replicate last season.”
