NHS LOTHIAN PREPARES FOR MASS VACCINATION

-

Plans are underway to roll out the coronavirus vaccine to people in West Lothian.

It has been confirmed that a number of sites are under consideration to administer the jabs in the Lothians.

NHS Lothian have revealed that they are getting prepared for mass vaccinations in West Lothian. David Small, NHS Lothian director of primary care services and exec lead for the vaccination programme, said:“NHS Lothian, along with colleagues across Scotland, is currently developing plans for mass vaccination for when a vaccine becomes available.

“A number of venues for mass vaccination in Lothian are being considered. It is important to use venues across the region that can cope with the large numbers involved, but also to provide broad access across Lothian.

“As soon as any decisions are taken and finalised, we will be able to announce and share them to provide some clarity and reassurance about the location of clinics and centres.”

The vaccine approval was revealed last week by the UK health regulator and the first vaccinations took place on Tuesday.

All health and social care staff working in health and care settings and who have face-to-face contact with patients, are eligible for a vaccination at this point.

This includes care home staff working in residential homes for the elderly in West Lothian as part of the West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership.

Leader of West Lothian Council, Lawrence Fitzpatrick said:“It is fantastic news that the first phase of this programme is now getting underway.

“The vaccine programme overall will be the largest of its kind ever undertaken and it will take time, but I’m delighted that our local Health and Social Care staff now have the opportunity to book an appointment to receive the vaccine.

“Without a doubt, this past year has been really, really difficult for everyone and this is a stepping stone in bringing an end to the pandemic.

“I’d urge those eligible in this first wave to take-up the Covid-19 vaccine. News regarding other staff groups will be provided by NHS Lothian in due course.

“This programme will play a significant role in tackling the coronavirus pandemic and the programme brings hope and encouragement.

“Whilst this is undoubtedly positive news, we need to continually reinforce the message that the delivery of this vaccine doesn’t mean the end to the warning messages around this awful virus.

“People should continue to follow the FACTS around coronavirus. Please continue to protect yourself and those around you.”
