Reading award joy
Pupils do it by the book
Knightsridge Primary School are delighted to announce that they have been awarded Scottish Book Trust’s Gold Reading Accreditation.
They are very proud of this achievement and are the first primary school in West Lothian to be awarded this accolade and one of only two in Scotland.
Knightsridge Primary School have been on their reading journey for many years now and have worked in partnership with the Scottish Book Trust, initially through the First Minister’s Reading Challenge, where they won an award for the Authority for promoting a reading culture.
Last year they then went on to win the Education Scotland National Literacy Award for excellence in literacy.
When Knightsridge Primary School were invited to take part in the pilot for the Reading Schools Accreditation, they welcomed this challenge with open arms.
Knightsridge Primary recognise that they would not have achieved this success without the support of so many partners.
They would like to thank all of their partners who worked and supported them to achieve these awards.
Pat Fisher, from Carmondean Library Services, has worked tirelessly to provide the school with excellent support and has encouraged children to visit the library with their parents. She regularly visited school to support junior librarians and allowed KPS to use Carmondean library over a number of years to launch their own ‘Author in Residence’ events.
The school would also like to thank Christina Banach who was their ‘Author in Residence.’
Christina provided a huge amount of support and encouragement to the children and taught them that they too had a ‘writer’s voice’ that should be heard and valued.
As a result of this encouragement, guidance and motivation, the children have produced their own books and shared them with their parents and community over the last few years.
Finally, the school would like to thank the other authors, #Bookpenpals, bookshops, West Lothian College, Mrs Cochrane – West Lothian Pedagogy Officer and all the parents who have enthusiastically supported and encouraged their children to read books at home and school and become life-long readers.
In Knightsridge Primary School they firmly endorse Malala Yusafzai’s inspirational words: “One child, one teacher, one book and one pen, can change the world.”
Head teacher, Allison Kennedy, said: “We are extremely proud of the journey we have been on over the last few years and have lots of ambitious plans going forward. Our greatest achievement is to foster a love of reading with our children as we know this opens so many doors and improves their life chances.”
