Wombles celebrate their first anniversary

-

A local volunteer group in West Lothian has celebrated its first year.

The Winchburgh Wombles are committed to keeping the village of Winchburgh clean and tidy.

Since the group launched in July this year, they have collectively volunteered over 200 hours of their time and filled the same number of bags of rubbish across several separate routes throughout the village.

The group toasted their efforts by getting together to enjoy a socially distanced glass of mulled wine with mince pies, courtesy of Winchburgh Developments Ltd which supports the group with funding and covers all equipment costs. Certificates were handed out recognising the ‘most regular wombler’ and ‘most hours and bags filled’ in 2020.

John West, co- founder of Winchburgh Community Growing Group, said: “I just want to extend a huge thanks to our Winchburgh Wombles who over the last six months have volunteered 200 hours of their own time to help us keep Winchburgh looking clean and tidy. The initiative has been a huge success and something to be proud of in what has been an extremely challenging year for everyone.” “We are all growing together as a community and it’s very humbling to see volunteers working so hard to make such a difference.”

Aileen Murdoch, co- founder of the Winchburgh Wombles, said: “The success we have seen this year really has exceeded our expectations and we have really been blown away by the efforts and commitment from the team. We’re still on the look-out for more volunteers and will continue to run our #wombleswanted campaign for anyone looking to get involved with us in 2021.”

John Hamilton, Chief Executive, Winchburgh Developments Ltd added: “I’d like to add my thanks to the entire Winchburgh Wombles team and to congratulate them on such a fantastic set of results. Everyone at Winchburgh Developments Ltd wishes the team a very merry Christmas, and we look forward to seeing them out wombling again next year.”
