It’s game on as sporting events return to schools

- CALLUM CARSON

After more than a year away, school sports have made their return – with plenty of small scale events taking place this term.

The James Young Cluster Primary Schools were given the chance to attend ‘Mini’ Tennis Festivals held at the outdoor courts at The James Young High School.

More than 160 Primary 3 pupils from five cluster schools came together across three afternoons to participate in the tennis festival and the pupils had brilliant fun trying out various tennis stations and drills.

The event was delivered by the high school’s Sports Leaders who were trained up by James Young Tennis club coach, Eoin Swan.

It provided the senior pupils with a great leadership opportunity, whilst also creating a link to the local tennis club that the children have the opportunity to join.

Eoin said: “It has been great to see so many local school children on our courts at James Young.

“Well done to the Sports Leaders for all their hard work preparing and leading the festival.”

Elsewhere, Linlithgow Academy recently hosted the first secondary school netball tournament in two years.

The event saw S1-S6 pupils from Linlithgow Academy, Inveralmond Community High School, Linlithgow Flyers and Broxburn United Sports Club take part in some friendly netball matches organised by Netball Scotland. And over 4000 pupils took part in Virtual Running Week, an event organised by Active Schools to replace the usual cluster cross-country festivals held to ensure that competitive physical activity opportunities are still available to pupils.

The running week was open to all primary aged pupils in West Lothian and involved them running distances from 100m to 1km depending on their year group.

A total of 4124 pupils took part from the following 18 primary schools: Broxburn, Calderwood, Carmondean, Eastertoun, Holy Family, Howden St Andrews, Knightsridge, Letham, Linlithgow, Linlithgow Bridge, Low Port, Meldrum, Simpson, Springfield, St Joseph’s, St Mary’s, St Nicholas, and Williamston.

Each school was in charge of setting up their own running course and then submitting their top two results from each year group.

The following pupils received first place for their respective year group:

P1 – Amy McGregor, Ethan Hill.

P2 – Emily Gibson, Parker Broadley. P3 – Tilly-Mae Johnston, Elyza Blackwood, Cooper Main.

P4 – Aurora Gibson, Noah Cohen.

P5 – Shania Stenhouse, Finlay McQuillan.

P6 – Riley Gibson.

P7 – Mya McKenzie, Travis Wilkins.
