Derby delight for Whitburn in five-star show

-

Whitburn strengthened their grip on third place in the East of Scotland Conference X table with a 5-1 victory at West Calder United in the only West Lothian derby of the weekend.

It was the Cauther who opened the scoring as Mark Wilkins fired home on 33 minutes, but the visitors had turned things around by the half-time whistle.

Martin Russell levelled things up on 41 minutes before Darren Liddell gave Whitburn the lead two minutes later.

After the break, Russell doubled the advantage early on before goals Louis Maguire and Dylan Weldon completed the scoring. Elsewhere in the division, Armadale Thistle almost inflicted a first loss of the season on Syngenta at a sodden Volunteer Park, with the away side netting a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw after Tam Murphy had given the hosts the lead.

There was also a 1-1 draw at Station Park as Livingston United drew with Edinburgh College.

Andy Gray netted for United, who had Hassan Nyang and Bryden Nolan sent-off.

Stoneyburn were unable to keep up their good form as they suffered a 7-1 loss away to Bo’ness Athletic, while the weather saw Fauldhouse United’s home clash with Pumpherston postponed.

Snow also put paid to Linlithgow Rose’s trip to Dunbar United in the East of Scotland Premier Division with that clash having to be abandoned before half-time with the Rose trailing 2-1.

Also in the top division, Broxburn Athletic fell just short of a comeback as they lost 3-2 at home to Jeanfield Swifts. Goals from Greg Binnie and Dan Nimmo weren’t enough to overcome a three-goal deficit as the Perth outfit climbed above their hosts in the table with the win.

In the West of Scotland, Harthill Royal suffered a 7-3 loss to Division Four league leaders Kilsyth Athletic.
