Lionesses learn the error of their ways

-

Livingston Women’s coach Paul Jaconelli has challenged his side to put their last performance away to Ayr United behind them as they prepare for a return in Sunday’s Championship South clash.

Livi suffered a 5-3 cup loss to United in October, which has so far been their only away loss of the season.

The Lionesses are firmly in the promotion hunt heading into the final few games as they sit seven points behind leaders Rossvale but with two games in hand and will be hosting them next weekend.

Jaconelli said:“We’ve got that incentive of correcting the mistakes from the last game there and showing that we’re better than the performance we produced that day.

“The manner of the defeat was a sore one because we weren’t good and that needs to change this time.

“We need to be on our game this weekend and through the rest of the season and if we can be at our best then the games will take care of themselves.

“All you can ask is for them to show their capabilities and hopefully we can do that.”

In the club’s first full season, the gaffer is full of belief that his side are starting to show their potential as the season reaches its conclusion.

He added: “We’d just got a team together and were playing well in the first few games when covid hit so really we’re arguably two years behind where we’d like to have been in terms of getting everything where we want.

“We’re now in a place where we’ve had a run of games and can see that everyone is gelling and us as coaches can see what works and what everyone’s strengths are in relation to the team and the tactics.

“We’ve got confidence and a bit of momentum behind us and a spell of consistent performances. These are the extra one, two per cent things that can really make all the difference in a game.”

Looking ahead he added:“It’s all to play for and that’s all you can ask for at this stage of the season.

“We’ll focus on ourselves and rely on our own performances and then see where that takes us.

“But obviously the nature of the split and with how tight the top of the table is, there will be teams in and around us taking points off each other because we all have to play everyone.

“But we’re very much in the mix and we’d have taken that before the first game. Now it’s up to us keep that up.”
